Sub-clinical or low level coccidiosis is less obvious but can
interfere with feed consumption and utilisation, resulting in poorer
feed conversion, weight gain and general health. Mild infection may
show as a watery scour for a few days followed by a slow recovery
but subsequent performance may be poor. It is during the first 6
months that calves are most susceptible to coccidiosis. Stresses are
more frequent and severe and a calf may require up to five exposures
to full coccidia life cycles to develop adequate immunity.
Bovatec is a coccidiocide and acts by disrupting the
cation balance the the bacterial cells causing an increase in water
pressure within the cell due to osmosis resulting in the bacterial
cells bursting before they can reach the intestinal wall.
Calf Vigor Vitamins
Vitamin A: promotes mucous membrane repair and integrity, and
aids vision, growth and tissue repair.
Vitamin D: stimulates the absorption and metabolism of calcium
and phosphorus for the formation of bone and teeth.
Vitamin C: important for the immune system and in bone, teeth and
connective tissue formation.
Vitamin E: this vitamin is a cellular anti-oxidant which protects
cells from free radical damage. Free radicals may come from normal
metabolic breakdown of food or from food contaminants or oxidative
breakdown such as those produced from rancid fats. It is also
crucial in organ development and the immune system.
B Group Vitamins: these are dietary essentials for pre-ruminant
calves. Once the rumen is fully developed after 6-10 weeks the rumen
microbes normally produce sufficient B vitamins to meet
requirements. B vitamins are active in enzyme systems involving
energy and protein.
Directions for Use
Dose Rate: 25 grams / calf / day.
Method: mix into whole milk or reconstituted milk replacer once
per day from 2 days of age and continue until intakes of meal feed,
containing an anti-coccidial, are sufficient to supply an
anti-coccidial dose sufficient to protect calves from infection.
Typically this will be between 3 and 5 weeks of age depending on the
rearing system employed.
Do not feed to calves under 2 days of age, do not add to milk
replacers which already contain an anti-coccidial, do not feed to
horses or dogs as anti-coccidial toxicity may be fatal in these
species.
